The students of the Middle School Summer Program were busy last week as they finished up a cosmic summer session. They reviewed planets and constellations and created scale models using marshmallows and pretzels. One student presented her findings in Spanish as a teacher provided the English translation. Students used cotton balls and plastic cutlery to complete a weightless relay. And, to end the week in true summer fashion, students enjoyed an ice cream social. (Thanks, Mrs. Brown, for the out-of-this-world SL Space Rocket sticker!)
The Middle School Summer Program focused on Greek Mythology and Constellations. After space traveling back in time, students pushed beyond the edges of the universe and arrived at the center of their own imaginations. Once there, students played a game of "silent telephone" and "drew" constellations on the backs of other students. Groups also created "new" constellations with glue and glitter and then, in the tradition of ancient Greece, imagined myths and wrote about them. In addition to all that creative work, students found time to fit in a good, old-fashioned game of kickball. (I'm sure the ancient Greeks, with their Olympic spirits, would appreciate this too!)
Week #2 of South Lewis Middle School finished with activities that are out of this world! Students focused on constellations and completed several activities related to the solar system (one with Oreos that represented the moon phases -- yum yum). Students also enjoyed visiting an onsite planetarium and were able to get up close and personal with the stars and objects that make up our universe. Looks like our kids have all the right stuff!

Last week the South Lewis Stellar Summer Middle School Adventure blasted off to explore the Solar System. Students created a scale model of our solar system and gathered facts and figures about each planet (pictures attached). Up next, students will continue to enhance reading, writing, and critical thinking skills and will further investigate the universe with a planetarium! Stay tuned for updates from our Star Travelers!
Please see a letter dated 7.8.21 from Superintendent Douglas Premo regarding a revised summer mask wearing policy effective Monday, July 12, 2021.

Congratulations to all of the Class of 2021 members who attended the Senior Prom at the Hayloft on Saturday, June 5. It was a real-live fairy tale, not virtual in any way (well except for the Grand March -- which now can be viewed through a link on the South Lewis website), complete with a court.
