This morning we took a crash course in Driver Ed -- and, by that, I mean NOT a "crash course".... These novice drivers are spending the summer in the classroom and behind the wheel learning the rules of the road. Today they share with us a few items on their "What Have I Learned in Driver Education?" list. Making the list: How to switch lanes, to use the engine brake, and to be prepared for the worst case scenario. Also, the negative effects of drowsy driving as well as drugs and alcohol. Looks like they have covered the basics of safe driving.
Keep up the great work and stay alert. Beep, beep.

I love a parade, and I REALLY love a parade when the South Lewis Transportation Department rolls on down the highway ... ahem... the parade path. The message from this crew last night was (and ALWAYS is) "STOP FOR THE LIGHTS!" That's great advice, and our students, parents, and drivers appreciate it when you follow it. Don't you just love this crew -- from start to finish?

It's Lewis County Fair Week and these South Lewis FFA members are already in action as Dairy Ambassadors at the Cheese Auction where funds are raised to support FFA chapters, the Enhancement Calf Program, and other agricultural related student organizations. Pictured here are South Lewis alum Emily Wright and current FFA Officers Megan Klossner, Mariah LaFountain, and Evelyn Farese. These members diligently follow their pledge to develop premier leadership and make a positive difference in the lives of others. We couldn't be more proud of them.

Attention community members who like to utilize the South Lewis Weight Room in the evening -- THE WEIGHT ROOM WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 20th. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see you there in the future. And remember ... you are one workout away from a better mood.

You may often wonder, "What does a high school Physics teachers do on summer vacation?" Well, wonder no more! Our very own Ms. Anne Huntress, South Lewis science teacher extraordinaire, was awarded a National Science Foundation Grant Internship at Syracuse University's Paulsen Lab. AND, if that doesn't satisfy your curiosity about what she's doing this summer (and impress you, as well), there's more: Ms. Huntress is making visual models of atomic deformation (which is seen in bending plastic or liquid crystals). WHAT? It's all weird and wonderful science, and we applaud her talent and imagination. Thank you, Ms. Huntress, for continuing in your quest to learn and for sharing with our students what you know to be true: Science is fun!

In more Middle School Summer Enrichment Program news ...
The students collaborated to calculate perimeters, to explore science project topics, to creatively write about captivating creatures, and to stitch up some silly critters of their own.
These kids are working hard to build skills and grow their knowledge, and we applaud them for it! Keep it up!

It was a busy week for the Middle School Summer Enrichment Program. Special guests included Rosie the chinchilla who taught math with Ms. Swiernik, Mrs. McGovern and two puppies who presented information about grooming at "Bath and Doggie Works", and some froggies that the kids "hunted" to review last week's lessons on amphibians. It was a wild week indeed!

The South Lewis High School Health Class has some reminders for staying safe and healthy this summer. In addition to keeping hydrated, using sunscreen, and being cautious of ticks, these students remind you to remain physically active, to make smart choices, and to surround yourself with good people like family and friends. It's all good advice, and we thank Mrs. Gino for teaching the importance of all of it. Enjoy the sun and have some fun!

HAPPENING NOW! Join our athletic trainer, Ms. Brown, as she works with all incoming 9th-12th gr. athletes during the off season to help maintain strength, endurance and agility. Every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of July from 5-6pm rain or shine at the high school track!

A reminder from the South Lewis Librarian, Mrs. Monks:
Summer is a fabulous time to spend time with a great book (or a few of them). Make time to turn the pages of some of your favorites AND you can earn free books from Barnes & Noble. All students who will enter grades 1 - 6 in the fall and who read 8 books before August 31st, can earn a free book. Check out the following link dispatch.barnesandnoble.com to see how it's done. Don't let summer slip away without getting lost in the magical world of books.

The South Lewis Middle School Enrichment Program is getting WILD for the summer. On Wednesday, Haley Sylvan from Zoo New York introduced various Watertown zoo residents -- several live ones and some animal artifacts -- to the middle school students. Among the live guests were a Blue Tongued Skink, a Hedgehog, and Hissing Cockroaches from Madagascar. Ms. Sylvan also brought animal pelts, bones, and feathers for the students to see and touch. The students look forward to another visit later this month. Way to get WILD kids.

It's a royal celebration of the Class of 2022, and here are a few glimpses of all the grandeur that prom had to offer. Pictured below are a few "candids" and The Prom Aristocracy. Dance on, royal friends!

As we wind down the week (and the 2021-2022 school year), let's take time to celebrate some soon-to-be graduates. Here's a look back on the Class of 2022 senior trip in May to Virginia Beach.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Marriott and Kiera Carmen who were named South Lewis High School's May Students of the Month. Both ninth graders, Liz and Kiera are brimming with good character and uphold the values that Falcons treasure the most: caring, diligent, motivated, and responsible. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for them. Until then... have a great summer, Liz and Kiera. We hope that you enjoyed your first year of high school!

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the 2021-2022 South Lewis Girls' Varsity Cross Country Team was honored by the Lewis County Boad of Legislators at a meeting that took place at the County Courthouse in Lowville. On November 13, 2021, the team won the New York State Class D Championship title in Chenango Valley. This dedicated group of remarkable athletes is worthy of our admiration. They run in rain and snow, train in stormy weather (and/or a pandemic), challenge their limits daily, compete with strength always, and, get this, have fun while doing it! Long may you run, ladies. We applaud you.
Shown here with Superintendent Douglas Premo, Coach Jack Bernard, and Coach Michele Liendecker are the athletes (from left to right) Mallory Kraeger, Madison Rhubart, Brynn Bernard, Lexi Bernard, Grace Bailey, and Shelby Becraft.

Are you ready to get a little wild? Good news! Water Safari tickets are now on sale at South Lewis. Stop by to see Ms. Smith in the office under the new entrance canopy. The water park opens for the season on Wednesday, June 15, and we are open here every weekday 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $32 each. What a bargain to check out where the fun never stops!

Don't be confused by the Carthage Comet..these are still some of our favorite Falcon friends! What a great day for the Exceptional Games at Carthage CSD! Featured in this picture are some members of Mr. Carvel's, Mr. Adriance's, and Mrs. Herring's classes.

More pics of our students on Spirit Day -- getting instructions about the rules of the game, getting some sun on the sidelines, and getting "Victory" signs from the field. Go Falcons!

Last Thursday, South Lewis High School students celebrated Spirit Day. Some of the day's activities: the first ever Falcon Family Feud, a formal introduction to the therapy dog Lewy, lots of outdoor games and contests, and the final pep rally of the year. Shown here are pictures of the obstacle course and of slip and slide kick ball.
