This group of high-visibility runners slowed down a bit to spend Wednesday directing traffic in the parking lot at the Oneida County Fair. Many thanks to Coaches Jack and Lori Bernard, who supervised and kept the athletes on track all day.
Time to check for understanding (now that bellies are full with the finest of Lewis County treats). Back in the classroom, Mr. Oakes, Mrs. Duell, Mrs. Delles, and Dr. Alger (behind the camera) review the processes of pasteurization and maple syrup production with students.
South Lewis alumnus Bob Cummings shared information about his business,Cummings Farms Creamline Milk, in Turin. Thankfully, he also shared his famous chocolate milk (which is pasteurized but not homogenized) and chocolate chip cookies with summer enrichment students! Way to go, Bob-O.
Students stir Markham's maple cream to the right consistency for eating. D-LICIOUS! Cortney Markham, a fourth generation farmer began sugaring as a hobby. Now, his hobby is a family-run operation with 3500 taps. Every year, Markham's Maple Shanty ships to places all over the U.S. Thanks for sharing with US!
Yesterday, Port Leyden Elementary teacher, Kerin Markham, and her husband, Cort, from Markham's Maple Shanty treated the summer enrichment students to a lesson in maple syrup production and to some tasty maple cream. Life was a little sweeter, indeed.
And now, the taste test! Students sampled Black River Valley Natural's maple milk and, on a scale of one to ten, the students voted that it's number YUM. Try some yourself at the store located at 4012 Center Street in Lyons Falls.Thank you, Mr. Munn for treating our kids.
South Lewis alumnus James Munn spoke with summer enrichment students about his new small business, Black River Valley Natural. Mr. Munn shared facts about the dairy industry and how to make butter. He partners with local family farms to provide premium handcrafted locally sourced artisan foods.
More "The Rainbow Fish Musical" rehearsal pics. Free admission one week from today on Wednesday, July 31, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Middle/High School Aquarium, um Auditorium.
The countdown continues until the opening of "The Rainbow Fish Musical"! Show times are 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. Come see what these kids can do when you give them a porpoise ... ahem ... a purpose!
Week 4 of the middle school summer enrichment program focuses on local industry and business. Yesterday, students enjoyed a showing of "The Lion King" at Lowville's Town Hall Theater. Originally an opera house, the theater has been in operation since 1949 and was once "heralded as the most outstanding beautiful theater in Northern New York." Many thanks to the O'Brien family, the owners, for hosting our young movie buffs.
Summer enrichment students created artwork that integrated lessons from the three weeks of summer school. With a variety of artwork lining the halls, students finished the week with a gallery crawl and adorned the creations with artful accolades and positive comments. Masterful!
Just six days of rehearsal until the premier of "The Rainbow Fish Musical." Looks like production is going swimmingly as Directors Bradway and Fitzgerald lead the aqua-actors through uncharted waters. There may be plenty of fish in the sea, but these Super Stagers are the best!
Week 3 of the summer enrichment program becomes fair game for fair games. Students step right up for some challenging Can-Jam and Bottle Bowling! We've got ourselves some winners!
Nothing says "fair food" like candy apples. Thanks to Mr. Oakes who prepared these special treats for EVERYONE!. That really is SWEET!
More maraca making moments! These kids are having so much fun; it's music to their instructors' ears.
Summer Enrichment Program Week 3: Local art, music, and the Lewis County Fair
Students made musical instruments from water bottles, dried beans & kernels, and masking tape. These maracas were inspired by the Iroquois turtle shell rattles and blue grass music that were discussed.
Also from the courts of South Lewis: Coach Gino works with volleyball players to keep fingers nimble and bodies flexible in the off-season. Way to pass, jump, and ... clean up, ladies!
Just a reminder: There is still time to collect and deliver your cans and bottles to help out our Falcon basketball teams. See attached for information. Also see attached for pictures of Coach Martin and the Lady Falcons working on game strategies.
Fish, bugs, birds, and plants: South Lewis has it all! Last week the summer school enrichment program learned about ecosystems.During a nature walk, students took pictures and used apps to make identifications: Merlin (bird identification) and Seek by iNaturalist (plant and wildlife identification).
